Transmission Repair Then and Now: Why Sioux Falls Drivers Have More Options Today

Transmission Repair Isn’t What It Was 20 Years Ago, and That’s Good News for You

Twenty years ago, if your transmission failed, the conversation at the counter was pretty short. We’d pull the transmission, tear it down on the bench, replace the worn and broken parts, put it back together, and reinstall it. One problem, one fix.

That approach served our customers well for a long time, and we still do it today. But the world around it has changed. Vehicles have changed, the parts supply has changed, and what people need from a repair shop has changed. So the way we handle major transmission repairs here in Sioux Falls has changed too.

Today, when your transmission needs major work, we can usually offer you a few real options instead of just one.

What Changed?

Transmissions got a lot more complicated. Back then, most vehicles on the road had a four- or five-speed automatic. Now it’s normal to see six, eight, and ten-speed units controlled by computer modules, solenoid packs, and sensors. They shift smoother and save fuel, but they have more parts, tighter tolerances, and more that can go wrong.

Parts got harder to get. This is the big one. Some internal components sit on backorder for weeks. Some manufacturers stopped selling individual parts and only sell larger assemblies. And when shops across the country are chasing the same part, it simply isn’t there when you need it. A rebuild that’s 95% done can sit in the bay waiting on one clutch pack or valve body.

Nobody can afford to be without their vehicle for long. You need to get to work. The kids need to get to school. Waiting three weeks for a part isn’t just inconvenient; it costs you money.

Our Approach Today: More Than One Way to Fix It

Instead of forcing every repair down one road, we now use a multi-faceted repair plan. Once we know exactly what’s wrong, we look at the options that make sense for your vehicle and lay them out for you.

1. In House Rebuild

This is the traditional repair we’ve always done. We tear down your transmission, inspect every part, replace what’s worn or damaged, and rebuild it right here in our shop on East 4th Street.

It’s often a great choice when parts are available and the damage is limited. You get your own transmission back, repaired by the people you’re talking to.

2. Remanufactured Transmission

We use remanufactured transmissions a lot more than we did 20 years ago, mostly because of parts availability and demand.

Here’s something a lot of people don’t realize: a quality remanufactured transmission is rebuilt using the same procedures we use in our own shop. It’s completely disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and rebuilt with new and updated components. The difference is that the work is done ahead of time, so the unit is often ready to ship when your vehicle comes in.

That means less time waiting on backordered parts and less time without your vehicle. Remanufactured units frequently include updates that correct known factory weak points, too.

3. Third-Party Crate Transmission

For some vehicles, a crate transmission from a trusted third-party supplier is the best fit. These units come ready to install and can be a strong option when your specific transmission is in high demand or hard to source any other way.

We only work with suppliers we trust, and we’ll explain what comes with the unit so there are no surprises.

4. Recycled (Used) Transmission

In some cases, a recycled transmission pulled from another vehicle makes sense. It’s typically the lowest-cost option and can be a practical choice for an older, higher-mileage vehicle, or if you just need dependable transportation for a while longer without a big investment.

It’s not the right fit for everyone, and we’ll be upfront about the tradeoffs, but it’s good to know it’s on the table.

Why Options Matter

Every customer’s situation is different. One person needs their truck back by Monday and wants the fastest turnaround. Another plans to keep their vehicle for ten more years and wants the most durable repair. Someone else is trading in next spring and just wants it running reliably until then.

Twenty years ago, all three of those people would have gotten the same repair. Today, we can match the fix to what actually matters to you.

How We Help You Decide

It always starts with an honest diagnosis. Before we talk about rebuilds or replacements, we make sure we know exactly what’s wrong. Sometimes a problem that feels like a failed transmission turns out to be a sensor, a wiring issue, or a fluid problem, and that’s a much smaller conversation.

If major work is needed, we’ll walk you through each option that fits your vehicle in plain language: what it costs, how long it will take, what warranty comes with it, and which one we’d pick if it were our own vehicle.

Then you decide. No pressure, no runaround.

Some Things Haven’t Changed

The tools are different, the transmissions are different, and the parts supply is definitely different. But the way we treat people is the same as it’s always been: straight answers, quality work, and a repair you can count on.

If your transmission is slipping, shifting hard, leaking, or just doesn’t feel right, call us at 605-339-0454 or stop by 605 E 4th Street in Sioux Falls. We’ll figure out what’s going on and show you your options.
